Chinese mainland’s companies took up only 4% of the global IC market share in 2021, showed the statistics from IC Insights in its latest updated 2022 McClean Report. The market share of fabless companies in China’s mainland was 9%, and IDM accounted for less than 1%.

The Report shows that in 2021, U.S. semiconductor companies led the worldwide IDM, fabless and total semiconductor sales. They captured 54% of the total worldwide IC market in 2021, propelled by a 47% share of IDM sales and a 68% share of fabless sales.

South Korean companies followed with a 22% share. Taiwan region’s semiconductor companies accounted for 9% of the global sales under their good fabless performance, while Europe and Japan held a 6% share.

South Korean and Japanese companies have weak performance in fabless sales, while companies in the Taiwan region and China’s mainland have low market share in IDM. Overall, U.S.-based companies show the most balance in terms of IDM, fabless, and total IC market share.

In stark contrast to the declines in Europe and Japan, the shares of semiconductor suppliers in the U.S. and Asia have climbed since 1990. Asian companies have seen their share surge from 4% in 1990 to 34% in 2021 in the global IC market.
