The global electric vehicle sales surged 60% year-on-year to 851,000 units in March, accounting for 15% of the global auto market, making it the second-best month in history, according to recent data released by U.S.based website CleanTechnica.

The top two EV brands, Tesla and Chinese manufacturer BYD achieved a record shipment performance. The global EV pioneer Tesla sold 180,253 units, and BYD sold 104,669 units. This is the first time that the monthly sales of EVs of the top two brands have exceeded 100,000 units at the same time.

Several other Chinese automakers have achieved substantial performance and entered the top 20 list, such as Chery(奇瑞), GAC Group(广汽集团), Changan Automobile(长安汽车), and Hozon Auto(哪吒汽车).

After a sale slump in February, XPeng and Great Wall returned to the best seller table in March, contributing half of the top 20 being Chinese brands.

While the global EV market faces a rosy outlook, China’s overall car sales in March dropped 48.1% year-on-year to 1.171 million, according to statistics from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Its total car shipment from January to April 2022 fell by 12.3% year-on-year to 7.68 million.
