Samsung’s chip fab in northeastern China’s Xi’an accounts for more than 10% of global flash memory chip production capacity

Samsung’s 12-inch flash memory chip project Phase II in Xi’an, capital of northeastern China’s Shaanxi Province, was put into production recently, increasing its flash memory chip to more than 10% of the global production capacity, reported by the local Shaanxi Daily.

Samsung’s Xi’an fab is the largest foreign-invested project in Shaanxi Province. With two phases of the project, it has 5,500 employees for production, R&D, and sales of high-end memory and other IC products.  

The first phase of the project started in September 2012 and was completed and put into operation in May 2014, with an actual investment of $10.87 billion.

The second phase of the 12-inch flash memory chip project started in August 2017 with an investment of $7 billion. In December 2019, the company invested an additional $8 billion to expand its scale further.
