Chinese leading electronics company TCL launched an advanced display technology project called "Star Wing Project" through its display supplier arm TCL CSOT in central China's Wuhan city. It also unveiled a joint laboratory with mobile device giant Xiaomi.

TCL CSOT (TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd, TCL华星光电技术有限公司)organized an opening ceremony on September 26 for the project. TCL set up TCL CSOT in November 2009, with four manufacturing centers in Shenzhen, Wuhan, Huizhou, and India. They have production lines of panels and modules for TV and mobile products.

The display technology under the project is intended to reach 1~480Hz AI frequency conversion, with low-frequency energy-saving and high-frequency smooth display advantages. There will be ultras battery life and reduced response time. The end products include display panels for high-end vehicles, notebook computers, tablets, VR devices.

Li Dongsheng, the founder and chairman for TCL, pointed out that the display panel, as an interactive entrance for AI, has broad prospects in 5G technology, AR/VR, and naked eye 3D fields.

Meanwhile, in a Yicai Global's report, TCL CSOT and handset maker Xiaomi has unveiled a joint laboratory to develop advanced display panel technologies.

A statement on TCL group's investor relations WeChat account says that Xiaomi will have access to new technologies and expand TCL CSOT's market share through the new lab in Wuhan.

TCL has supplied display panels for several Xiaomi flagship phones, including active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) curved screens for Xiaomi 10 and AMOLED foldable displays for Xiaomi's first foldable smartphone Mix Fold.

Li Yaqin, general manager of consultancy Sigmaintell told Yicai Global that TCL would likely make more competitive mid-sized display panels in the next two years.

TCL CSOT also said that it would establish joint labs with multiple upstream and downstream firms such as Longli Technology, Lenovo, and Huawei affiliated HiSilicon.

The company's initiatives include investing RMB 10 billion ($1.5 billion) in core links of the industry chain to work closely with universities and research institutes.

TCL CSOT provides advanced display technologies such as Mini-LED, Micro-LED, OLED, and Ink Jet Printing. Its products range from various-sized display panels and touch modules, interactive whiteboards, video walls, automotive displays, and gaming monitors.
