Xiaomi is reported to set up a production base in Argentina’s island Tierra del Fuego to manufacture smartphones, reported Argentina’s PÁGINA 12.
The news was translated into Chinese by Chinese web media Jiemian. Xiaomi has not confirmed it yet.
An Argentia official attending the Winter Olympics in Beijing disclosed the news. Tierra del Fuego is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland. Xiaomi’s announcement is expected to be released within 60 days.
There have been reports that Xiaomi’s cellphones will be manufactured in the country by local producer Etercor-Solnik, an Argentine electronics company that runs a factory in Tierra del Fuego with the industrial equipment required for cutting edge electronic products.
The company has almost 400 employees and has offered services for Bose, Nokia, and Apple. It will also provide the after-sale service for Xiaomi products, PÁGINA 12 reported.
Xiaomi was founded in 2010 in Beijing by Lei Jun. It is now the third-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world after Apple and Samsung. It has a big global ambition.
