Jointly established by Tsinghua University and Peking University, the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Integrated Circuits was inaugurated in Beijing on February 19, JW Insights learned.

With the approval of the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and in-depth cooperation with crucial parties in Beijing’s IC industry, the center aims to map out early plans for cutting-edge technology research, make breakthroughs in critical and core areas, and foster high-quality talents.

The center’s directors are professor Huang Ru of Peking University and professor You Zheng of Tsinghua University. The Presidents of the two universities and the directors attended the official launch ceremony.

Qiu Yong, the President of Tsinghua University, said Tsinghua’s excellent academic background, talent basis, and project experience would play an important role in the center. They will make great efforts in dealing with critical technologies and cooperate with related parties.

Hao Ping, the President of Peking University, expressed the hope that the center could attract outstanding IC talents, focus on critical technical problems in the IC field, and promote collaborated research. And the center should strive to make breakthroughs in fundamental theoretical research, advanced technology R&D, and product improvement, he added.

According to the sources at the center, it is committed to promoting universities to adapt to industrial changes, break through the barriers between production and research, and accelerate the vertical integration and collaborative innovation of the technology chain. Representatives from the industry and a project manager system will be introduced to the center. The former assists project evaluations and decision-making, and the latter helps zero in on industry demands.

Another task for the center is to foster advanced talents for the IC industry. Both universities have set up IC schools last year and boast advantages in the field. The center may help them design talent training programs, fix IC curriculum, and promote the integration of innovation, industry, and talents.
