BOE, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of display panels, announced that it started recently mass production of its f-OLED LTPO variable frequency display, which has been used by Huawei’s spin-off brand Honor for its new flagship phone Magic 4.

BOE’s new product is a 6.81-inch flexible OLED screen, it has a 1Hz-120Hz adaptive frequency dynamic refresh rate, and a 360Hz high touch sampling rate. It is based on BOE’s self-developed Q8 new-generation EL light-emitting device and adopts a new pixel arrangement to optimize the underlying logical structure of pixel display and comprehensively upgrades the display quality.

While high refresh rate displays have helped make a lot of mid-range and flagship Android phones feel significantly smoother to use than the standard 60Hz displays, it can be rather power-hungry, especially when running at QHD resolutions. That’s where LTPO display tech comes in. LTPO, or Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, allows for a display to dynamically change its refresh rate, so the device can have both a high refresh rate and resolution without turning a smartphone into a battery-sucking gadget.

Conventional LTPO technical solutions also have problems such as poor display of dark scenes and low-frequency flickering, and the preparation process of LTPO backplanes is relatively complicated, which are daunting challenges for the display industry.

BOE’s f-OLED LTPO variable frequency display made important breakthroughs in solving technical problems such as improving dark-state display uniformity, reducing low-frequency flicker, enhancing OxideTFT’s photosensitivity, improving transmission, and optimizing LTPO mass production process.
