Russian media Kommersant reported that the EU-imposed export ban on Russia includes silicon wafers used for producing semiconductor components in the list and Russian companies might need to seek alternative suppliers from China.
Russian wafer factories' 90-nm process production line depended on imported silicon wafer materials in semiconductor production due to Russia's lack of high-purity silicon wafer preparation capacity. With the EU ban impacting Russia's semiconductor production, "only China could be the alternative country to supply the involved materials," said the report.
The newspaper also revealed that Mikron, the country's largest microelectronics manufacturer, had been working on testing and introducing materials from China in the past few years to replace European supply.
