China Mobile has officially launched the interoperability standard of GSXR (General Standard for XR) recently, to promote the development  XR industry in China, the company announced.

Cui Fang, deputy general manager of the Technology Department of China Mobile Group Device, a China Mobile subsidiary, said “The goal of the GSXR interoperability standard is to drive the cooperation among all parties in the industry chain, jointly promoting the development of XR products. This move will gradually integrate the domestic market, and gradually expand to the international market.”

In March 2021, China Mobile initiated the establishment of the GSXR working group with industry partners to promote the construction of XR standards. The standard includes three parts: interoperability standards, development kits, and evaluation system.

An industry observer commented that the entire XR industry has been severely fragmented for a long time with all manufacturers want to build their own independent ecosystem, impeding the communication with each other, and hindering the XR industry. With XR standards in place, the entire industry ecosystem will be more consistent, pushing the XR industry markets.
