JW Insights, China’s leading information and consulting service on semiconductor and related ICT industries, has released a latest report with demographic profile of professionals in the 135 Chinese listed IC companies in 2021.
As the world’s largest semiconductor market, IC sales in China reached RMB1,045.83 billion ($156.26 billion) in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 18.2%.
1. Number of professionals
Data shows that the 135 listed companies had 456,600 employees in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 17.54%. The number of manufacturing personnel reached 266,000, ranking first in all types of positions, followed by technical personnel of 119,200.
As China’s semiconductor industry enters a period of rapid development, the listed companies recorded their number of sales, technical and functional positions increased by more than 20%.
The number of employees in IDM and packaging and testing sectors exceeded 100,000, followed by 99,000 employees in the design sector.
The personnel in the equipment sector expanded most, with an increase of 42.48%, followed by electronic components (21.83%) and packaging and testing (20.01%) in 2021.
2. Educational backgrounds
The largest proportion of employees’ education background in China’s semiconductor industry is junior college and below (43.17%) in 2021,.
As expected, the design sector is filled up with more highly educated professionals graduated from established colleges and universities; The employees in wafer manufacturing and packaging and testing tend to have more work experiences.
JW Insights surveyed the market for types of professionals the industry needs and found out: the packaging and testing industry has the highest demand for a college degree or below (62.36%), the equipment sector has the highest demand for bachelor’s degree (35.42%), and the design and high-end manufacturing sectors prefer postgraduate qualifications the most.
Doctoral degree personnel were increasingly wanted in the material, packaging and testing sectors and IDMs; The need in the material sector increased by 104.41% in 2021. However, they numbered less in the electronic components industry, which wanted more personnel with college degrees and below.
3. Talents productivity
The report said that in 2021, the cumulative revenue of 135 listed companies is RMB662.2 billion ($98.94 billion), a year-on-year increase of 34.76%, with the total employee cost of RMB85.1 billion ($12.72 billion). The employee productivity of the design sector in 2021 was RMB2.837 million ($423,890), exceeding the industry average.
The proportion of labor costs in company revenue in the whole industry showed a downward trend, with an average decrease of 4.42 percentage points, while that of packaging and testing sector increased by 10.02% due to the decline of cheap labor in China.
