Chinese display panel manufacturers BOE(京东方) and Tianma Microelectronics(天马微电子) ranked second and third in the smartphone screen market in the first half of 2022 after Samsung Display, market research firm Strategy Analytics said in a report on October 17.

“Smartphone Display Panel Market Share Q2 2022: LCD Panel Revenues Plunge”, the global smartphone display panel market registered a revenue of $20 billion in the first half of 2022, a five percent revenue decline year-over-year, according to the Strategy Analytics’ report.

The report finds that the smartphone display panel market continues to be led by Samsung Display with 53 percent revenue share followed by BOE Technology with 15 percent and Tianma Microelectronics with 8 percent. The top-three display panel vendors captured nearly 76 percent revenue share in the global smartphone display panel market during the period, Strategy Analytics’ data showed.

Commenting on the performance of major vendors, a senior analyst at Strategy Analytics said that Samsung Display is in a favorable position to benefit from customer demand, providing its OLED panel with a strong sales pipeline of customer orders. Chinese vendors BOE, TCL, CSOT(华星光电) and Tianma Microelectronics have ramped up OLED production and secured orders to supply OLED panels to leading smartphone brands in the first half of 2022.

Another industry insider commented that the market for smartphone display panels was held back by sinking LCD panel demand while OLED adoption expanded across mid-tier smartphones to enable OEMs to drive momentum. Display vendors saw rising demand for Flexible OLED panels with high refresh rate specifications which drove OLED growth during the period, according to Strategy Analytics.
