Chinese display panel giant BOE may provide Micro-LED screen for Apple’s new Watch to be launched in 2024, reported TechGoing on January 8.
Samsung has been the OLED supplier to Apple, including OLED panels for Apple Watch as well. Market analyst Jeff Pu revealed in a memo that Apple is planning to equip the next-generation Watch Ultra with a Micro LED display, Samsung does not currently produce Micro-LED panels for small devices.
It is reported that Samsung only produces large-screen devices mainly used for TVs and the like. Therefore, analysts believe that it is unlikely that the Apple Watch equipped with Micro-LED panels will be mass-produced by Samsung, and the information on this supplier is still unclear. However, given that Apple has increased BOE’s screen supply, there is a high probability that Micro-LED panels will be produced by BOE.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted on January 4 that BOE has beaten Samsung and secured most new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus display orders in the second half of 2023. If development and production proceed smoothly over the next few months, BOE will become the largest display supplier for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, with a market share of around 70% (compared to Samsung’s 30%). An executive from BOE said that the company is continuing to expand cooperation with Apple and other customer resources, according to Securities Daily.
