(JW Insights) Apr 7 -- BOE, a Chinese display giant, announced that its cumulative independent patent applications have exceeded 80,000 as of 2022, according to its 2022 annual report posted on April 3.
BOE also holds over 40,000 valid authorized patents globally, with 28,000 patents related to flexible OLEDs among its total independent patent applications.
Its annual report further reveals that its invention patents account for over 90% of the company's annual new patent applications, with more than 33% of the patents being filed overseas. More than 50% of the total applications are in flexible OLED, sensing, AI and big data sectors, and are registered in the US, Europe, Japan, and South Korea, among others, said the company.
In addition, BOE invested RMB12.602 billion ($1.83 billion) in R&D in 2022. This amount represents 7.06% of BOE's total revenue.
Meanwhile, BOE ranked seventh with 1,884 applications in the 2022 global PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) applications ranking. This is the seventh consecutive year that BOE made the top 10 list. Along with BOE, two other Chinese companies - Huawei and OPPO - also enter the top 10 list, with Huawei ranking first with 7,689 applications and OPPO the sixth with 1,963 applications, said the latest report of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The WIPO report also shows that China continued to be the top origin of PCT applications filed with 70,015, a modest growth of 0.6% in 2022 from the previous year. The US came in second, followed by Japan, South Korea, and Germany.
