(JW Insights) Jun 14 -- Huawei secured 52% of 5G base station work for China's top telecoms company China Mobile between 2023 and 2024, the largest portion of this year's tendered contracts, according to reports by JW Insights and South China Morning Post on June 13.

The deal would involve the sale of 45,426 5G base stations worth about RMB4.1 billion ($574 million).

Chinese telecoms equipment provider ZTE was the second-largest winner, accounting for about 26% of the contracts awarded, equivalent to sales of 23,227 5G base stations. Chinese company Datang, Finland's Nokia and Sweden's Ericsson were the remaining successful bidders.

China Mobile previously announced plans to have a total of 1.645 million 5G base stations in operation by the end of this year, with an annual increase of 360,000 stations.

However, data released by China Mobile in early June shows that the cumulative number of operational 5G base stations has already exceeded 1.6 million. Industry insiders predict that the figure will surpass 2 million after the completion of the current procurement round.

Jin Zhuanglong, minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said in early June that MIIT will work to further enrich and expand 5G application scenarios, deepen the integration of industrial internet, improve the industrial internet technology system, standard and application systems and build a group of 5G factories to vigorously promote intelligent, green, and integrated development the manufacturing industry, said the JW Insights report.
