According to press reports, this project covers an area of 8,200 square meters with a total investment of RMB1.8 billion ($283 million). It is planned with multiple functions for operations, strategic planning, investment, new plant planning, and international marketing. It will house TCL's research institute for future display technology.

TCL has ambitious goals with display technology. Li Dongsheng, its founder, and chairman told the press recently, "We have further increased investment in medium-sized displays following strong demand for laptops, tablets and premium vehicle-mounted display products, and started construction of our T9 production line,"

He added that the global display market is ushering in a new round of development opportunities. TCL will integrate into the global semiconductor display industrial chain, work with international partners to explore cutting-edge technologies.

"We are making inroads into new business sectors, such as augmented reality and virtual reality, mini light-emitting diodes, and organic light-emitting diode televisions, in a bid to seek new growth points," Li said.

Through its subsidiary - TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co Ltd – TCL will invest more than 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) in developing next-generation display technologies and materials, expand new application scenarios, and build a semiconductor display ecosystem over the next five years.

TCL was founded in 1981 in Huizhou, southern China's Guangdong Province. It has become a multinational electronics conglomerate, with a wide range of electronics products from TVs, audio, and smart home devices to display panels and semiconductors. It sells to 160 markets worldwide.
