China’s EV lithium-ion battery giant CATL establishes the Future Energy Research Institute with Shanghai Jiao Tong University to deepen their cooperation

CATL (宁德时代) announced recently that it has established its Future Energy Research Institute in Shanghai to carry out in-depth cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU上海交通大学) in research innovation and talent training.

CATL has plans to turn this research institute into a global center for future energy innovation.

CATL began to cooperate with SJTU several years ago. It was reported that it officially inaugurated the School of Future Technology with SJTU in August 2021. CATL’s chairman Zeng Yuqun (Robin Zeng), a graduate of SJTU, was appointed the honorary dean of the School of Future Technology. The two parties also signed a cooperation agreement to build the joint research center for clean energy technology.

According to SJTU, the first phase of the program had a total of 13 projects from its affiliated schools and departments. They collected topics from different fields of chemistry, materials, machinery, electrical and electronic, software algorithms, photovoltaics, robots, electronic systems based on the project requirements provided by CATL. The two parties reviewed the projects' progress on January 8.

Founded in 2011, CATL is a global leader of new energy innovative technologies, committed to providing solutions and services for new energy applications. Headquartered in Ningde in Southeast China's Fujian province, the company was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in June 2018. Many EV manufacturers are CATL's clients.
