​German car giant Volkswagen completes constructing an EV body workshop in eastern China’s Anhui Province

Volkswagen Group (China) announced that it completed the construction of the body workshop for electric vehicles in its plant in eastern China's Anhui Province and installation of manufacturing equipment will begin in March.

According to the information on the company's website on February 23 that the plant will be completed in mid-2022 and the full-scale factory will manufacture pure-electric vehicles, with a maximum production capacity of 350,000 units annually. Its first electric vehicle model is expected to roll off the production line in the second half of 2023.

The construction of the plant started in April 2021, and more than 70% of the construction work has been completed. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen (Anhui) said that he is proud of the six-month progress his team has made with the local support. He added that the company is an integral part of Volkswagen Group's electrification strategy and will inject a strong impetus into its future mobility blueprint of pure electric and intelligent vehicles. The company will improve continuously its R&D capabilities.

Volkswagen Anhui's future products will be based on the Group's Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). It will fully leverage the global synergies of the Group to intensify its e-mobility strategy in China and contribute to achieving net-carbon neutrality by 2050, according to the company.

In December 2020, the joint venture JAC Volkswagen Automotive was renamed as Volkswagen (Anhui) Automotive Company after Volkswagen Group increased its stake in the company to 75%. Volkswagen Group takes over management control at Volkswagen Anhui.
