Tsinghua University’s Department of Electronic Engineering commemorated its 70th anniversary on the afternoon of April 23 on the university campus.

Tsinghua’s Department of Electronics was founded in 1952 as new China’s electronics industry began to develop. Over the past 70 years, it has trained more than 21,000 graduates and won more than 50 national science and technology awards.

In the past ten years, the Department of Electronics has made great efforts to improve discipline construction and talent cultivation and entered the forefront of world-class disciplines. By the end of 2021, the department has attracted nearly 20 young teachers with top academic and teaching levels. It has also achieved world-leading results in integrated optoelectronics, smart chips, digital TV, radar, navigation, and aerospace network wireless communication.

Wang Xiqin, President of Tsinghua University, said in his speech, “In the past 70 years, the Department of Electronic Engineering has cultivated a large number of outstanding graduates and achieved a series of major scientific research achievements with the mission of developing electronic and photonic resources to serve the country and human beings.”

“It has made important contributions to China's economic and social development. We will make every effort to build the department into one of the world's top sources of talents and scientific and technological innovation,” he added.

Ren Wangyu, head of the Department of Electronics, expressed his gratitude to the founding veterans of the department and the supporting friends at home and abroad.

Nearly 500 guests from all walks of life attended the event, including the heads of associate departments, representatives of teachers, students, and alumni of the Department of Electronic Engineering.
