Alibaba Cloud’s self-developed central processing unit for cloud computing is being widely used in many commercial fields, according to a published interview with Jeff Zhang, president of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding’s computing and artificial intelligence arm, reported Yicai Global on November 4.
The Yitian 710 chip helps improve the cost performance ratio of cloud computing power by over 30% and reduces the power consumption per unit by 60%, Jeff Zhang said at Alibaba Cloud’s annual tech event, the Apsara Conference, in eastern China's Hangzhou last week.
The CPU will be deployed in 20% of Alibaba’s new computing power added over the next two years, Zhang added. And the Hangzhou-based company will continue to expand the utilization of its self-developed chips.
The Yitian 710 was debuted at the Apsara Conference last year. It is Alibaba Cloud’s first self-developed Arm-architecture chip dedicated to cloud scenario development, said the Yicai report.
Alibaba's cloud segment, made up of office messaging app DingTalk and Alibaba Cloud, logged a 10% jump in revenue in the fiscal quarter ended June 30 from a year earlier to RMB17.7 billion ($2.4 billion), according to its latest earnings results.
