More Chinese EDA companies are becoming suppliers in Samsung’s foundry service as a result of geopolitical changes. South Korean media Chosun Biz reported that among the 23 EDA partners of the Samsung Foundry, eight are in China, accounting for one-third, second only to the 12 from the US.

Sources told Chosun Biz that for Samsung and SK Hynix, Chinese EDA tools can help reduce over-reliance on the current EDA giants and licensing fees. The top global players are Synopsys, Cadence, Siemens and ASML, but the US export controls stop them from selling high-end tools to China.

China's EDA companies have been adopting a low-price strategy to expand cooperation with Samsung, said an industry insider. Affected by the US sanctions, China's EDA industry has been facing difficulties in exporting. In 2022, leading Chinese EDA suppliers such as Empyrean (华大九天) and Primarius (概伦电子) became Samsung Foundry partners by offering lower prices.

The rise of China's EDA tools is reportedly attributed to the Chinese IC design houses for Samsung Foundry that turn to domestic EDA suppliers when they cannot use tools from the US.
