China’s EV giant BYD rolls out multiple new models at Shanghai Auto Show and is likely to launch an electric pickup truck in the future

(JW Insights) Apr 25 -- China’s EV titan BYD debuted multiple models at the Shanghai Auto Show (April 18-27) and is expected to unveil its first electric pickup, according to press reports.

Pandaily reported on BYD's its first luxury off-road SUV U8 and all-electric supercar U9 under its premium brand Yangwang at the show. The U8 was launched in two versions: the luxury version and the off-road version. The official pre-sale price is RMB1.098 million (about $160,000).

This architecture exclusive to high-end new energy vehicles, which includes BYD Group’s most extreme technology applications, forward-looking technological concepts and deep vertical integration. It covers six core technologies: E-Platform 4.0, DiLink 3.0, Blade Battery, Super Body Structure, Intelligent Cockpit and ADAS, said Pandaily.

U8’s maximum power output exceeds 1100 horsepower and it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. In YangWang architecture, these top technologies are flexibly combined like a Rubik’s Cube to achieve coverage of multiple scenarios such as outdoor off-road, urban, and track.

At the same time, the BYD Dynasty Series Song L concept car made its global debut at the show as well. As a new high-end B-class pure electric SUV of the Dynasty brand, Song L is developed with pioneering, sporty and technological concepts.

In addition, the BYD Seagull, designed based on the concept of “marine aesthetics”, has a dynamic and lively overall style that instantly conveys a sense of vitality and confidence. The pre-sale price range is between RMB 78,800 to 95,800 ($12,000 to $14,000).

Meanwhile, there are exposed spy photos of BYD's pickup truck model in test prototype circulating online. Pandaily reported on April 23 that vehicle is BYD’s first pickup truck model and is expected to be available in two power versions: a pure electric drive system and a plug-in hybrid drive system.

According to BYD’s previous new vehicle plan, it is clearly stated that in 2023, BYD will launch an electric pickup truck under a new brand belonging to the “professional and personalized” category.

In addition, the vehicle is equipped with square-shaped headlights, and the far and near lights inside are arranged in layers and incorporate lens design.

BYD pickup truck adopts mainstream double-row seat layout and is equipped with side pedals. The charging port appears on the right side of the cargo compartment, indicating the identity of a new energy vehicle.

According to reports, the BYD electric pickup truck is expected to be equipped with a hydraulic active suspension system, streaming media rearview mirror, Huawei AR-HUD and other functions, and will adopt a gear-shifting mechanism, said the report from Pandaily.
