(JW Insights) Jul -- Four major Chinese smartphone brands Vivo, Xiaomi, Realme, and Oppo shipped 19.8 million smartphones in India in the second quarter, taking up 55% of the market share, according to a report by analyst company Canalys on July 19.

The Indian smartphone market shipments stabilized at 36.1 million units in Q2, a modest decline of 1%, lower than the 36.4 million units shipped during the same period last year. Samsung retained its leading position in the market with an 18% market share, shipping 6.6 million units.

Vivo reclaimed the second position after a quarter, shipping 6.4 million units. Xiaomi secured the third spot by shipping 5.4 million units, while realme and OPPO (excludes OnePlus) rounded out the top five by their shipments of 4.3 million and 3.7 million units, respectively. Their market shares all decreased except for Vivo.

The remaining brands shipped 9.7 million units, which is a significant increase from the 6.6 million units during the same period last year, a 44% jump. Their market share increased from 18% to 27%.

“Smartphone vendors are acclimatizing to the dynamic business environment, focusing on ensuring long-term sustainability,” said Sanyam Chaurasia, Canalys analyst, adding that brands are cementing their position in the market by collaborating further with the Indian channel ecosystem.

Canalys also predicts a more favorable demand environment in the second half of 2023 due to improved consumer spending during festive season.
