(JW Insights) Oct 19 -- China is to promote the evolution and innovative development of 5G lightweight (RedCap) technology, and establish a complete industrial ecosystem by 2025, according to a recent notice issued by the country's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
5G RedCap (Reduced Capacity), is a lighter version of the 5G standard that will cater to those use cases where ultra-low latency is not essential, but there is a need for reasonable throughput to support data flows.
In the "Notice on Promoting the Evolution and Innovative Development of 5G Lightweight (RedCap) Technology, MIIT emphasized that by 2025, the comprehensive capabilities of the 5G RedCap industry would significantly improve, standards would continue to evolve, and the scale of application would continue to grow.
All cities at or above the county level nationwide will have 5GRedCap coverage. The application scenarios of 5G RedCap would be further enriched in areas such as industry, energy, logistics, connected vehicles, public safety, and smart cities.
Additionally, MIIT specified seven key tasks to promote standard formulation, build industrial systems, and accelerate network capacity upgrades.
"We will encourage local governments to introduce supporting policies to support the construction of 5G RedCap networks, foster industry development, promote application innovation, ensure security, and construct a thriving ecosystem," an MIIT official said.
