(JW Insights) Nov 3 -- China’s Minister of Commerce (MOC) Wang Wentao met with Sanjay Mehrotra, President and CEO of Micron Technology, and his delegation on November 1, according to MOC's information.

Wang said that China is steadfast in promoting high-level opening-up and continuously optimizing the investment environment for foreign enterprises, providing services and guarantees for foreign investors. He extended a warm welcome to Micron Technology to continue establishing a strong foothold in the Chinese market and further its development while adhering to Chinese laws and regulations.

Sanjay Mehrotra provided an overview of Micron Technology’s business development and expressed the company’s commitment to expanding investments in China in his meeting with Minister Wang.

As of now, Micron has a DRAM product assembly and testing factory in Xi’an, northwest China’s Shanxi Province, with a design center in Shanghai focusing on cutting-edge SSD and mobile NAND products. Additionally, Micron operates three labs in China.

On June 16, Micron announced plans to invest over RMB4.3 billion($587 million) in its assembly and testing facility in Xi’an, over the coming years. The company had decided to acquire packaging equipment from Powertech Technology Inc(PTI), a local provider of IC backend services. Micron also plans to expand its Xi’an facility with new high-performance packaging and testing equipment to better meet the needs of Chinese customers, according to the company.

On May 21, 2023, China’s cyberspace regulator said Micron had failed a network security review and barred Chinese operators of key infrastructure from buying from the largest U.S. memory chipmaker.
