Shanghai-based leading ODM Wingtech Technology (闻泰科技) announced on March 9 that its IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) product series have been successfully taped out, independently designed and developed by its wholly-owned subsidiary Nexperia B.V. (安世半导体).
IGBT is the core device for power conversion and the primary supporting technology for new energy, energy-saving, and low-carbon economy. It features fast switching speed and high current carrier density and has a broad application market, mainly for new energy vehicles, photovoltaics/wind power generation, smart power grid, high-power supply, industrial control, and home appliances. With ample market potential and high technical barriers, the design and application of IGBT require the rich experiences of engineers and brand reputation.
Wingtech said that its taped-out IGBT products still need to be verified by clients, so mass production volume is still uncertain. The company will continue to perform its information disclosure obligations based on the progress of related products and projects.
Wingtech started in 1993 as a private electronics company. Its fortune has been amassed since 2006 when it expanded into the mobile phone design house (IDH) business. The company was listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2016 and acquired NXP’s Nexperia in 2019. Nexperia set up a China Research Institute in 2021, focusing on R&D for new products like high-voltage power devices and analog ICs.
