(JW Insights) May 22 -- Meng Pu, chairman of Qualcomm China, said the integration of 5G and AI is the trend of technological development, and hybrid AI has multiple advantages. He made these comments at the 7th World Intelligence Congress held in northern China's coastal city Tianjin during May 18-21.
Meng's speech is entitled "Innovation and Collaboration: Enabling High-Quality Development Across Industries with 5G+AI. “The cloud-based processing is costly and inflexible, while hybrid AI has cost, energy, performance, privacy, security, and personalization advantages. With the unprecedented innovation and development brought by generative AI, AI is becoming a new engine for high-quality development in various industries including smartphones, TVs, video games, autonomous driving, smart factories, smart healthcare, and intelligent detection,” Meng said.
5G-based AI is experiencing rapid development, he added. 5G supports near real-time data sharing with other devices and clouds, enabling new applications, services, environments, and experiences.
"In combination with edge and cloud, the integration of 5G and AI will drive innovation in a transformative way. Unlike processing solely in the cloud, hybrid AI distributes and collaboratively processes AI workloads between the cloud and edge devices, enabling the scalable expansion of AI and unlocking its enormous potential," said Meng.
The AI application rate is expected to increase from less than 10% in 2018 to 100% by 2025 in smartphones, PCs/tablets, XR, automobiles, and the Internet of Things (IoT), according to forecasts of relevant institutions. Meng Pu believes that driven by this trend, edge AI will become a standard feature of many critical platforms, bringing opportunities for further development of China's and the world's AI ecosystems.
Meng also pointed out that how to make AI run more efficiently in low-power environments is the area that Qualcomm's AI research and development is most concerned about. Qualcomm is committed to promoting the popularization of edge AI by providing efficient hardware, algorithms, and software tools to continuously improve performance-to-power ratio.
Qualcomm is currently providing its accumulated AI technology to automotive manufacturers and other ecosystem partners to jointly create intelligent experiences for automotive users.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon cockpit platform has supported more than 80 models launched by Chinese automobile brands, and leading Chinese automakers have conducted in-depth cooperation with Qualcomm in the digital cockpit, according to Meng.
In addition, Qualcomm is also cooperating with Chinese automakers in the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), covering L1 to L4 systems. Qualcomm has reached a series of cooperation agreements with many Chinese automakers, including BYD, NIO, Great Wall Motor, Li Auto, Geely, and Hongqi.
"Qualcomm will stick to the strategy of “Rooted in China, Share Wisdom, Enable Innovation,” and help expand and popularize intelligent networked devices leveraging advanced connectivity, computing, and AI technologies," said Meng.
